Creative arts

Having recently acquired additional creative arts space, Worcester Snoezelen is excited to be expanding its services and as a result is now offering art based workshops on an individual or group basis.

We promote the freedom of expression of all our individuals. The power to demonstrate feelings through illustration and mark-making is an interesting and fulfilling concept. Therefore we encourage all aspects of experimentation with colour, shape and materials allowing each individual to explore, discover and involve themselves however they choose.

Different media are used through the application of various artistic techniques and processes. Paper, paint, inks, pastels, crayons, clay and recycled materials such as plastics and fabrics are used to accomplish methods of printing, marbling, collage, card and book making and model making, to name a few. Subject matter can vary. Inspirations and themes such as seasonal change and celebratory occasions which are considered to be relevant can provoke all manner of associations, encapsulating original ‘artscapes’.

Each of the artistic techniques/processes has proven to be a successful tool in encouraging motivational skills and concentration, along with social interaction. An enhanced use of motor skills for some individuals has also been evident and shows the importance of intellectually stimulating activities which integrate a sensory driven foundation. With this in mind, the exploration of materials and stimulating textures is limitless. Patterns created from fabrics, foam, carpet remnants, plastic straws and the like produce interesting prints and collage work.

In November 2009 we were excited to exhibit our Debut Creative Arts Showcase at Snoezelen’s Annual Concert. It gave us the opportunity to display the many artistic talents of users of the Creative Arts Service and members of the Rainbow Drama Club. We exhibited an array of art work with an autumnal theme carried through. Autumn leaf collages, mobiles and abstract paintings were displayed.  This gave certain individuals a sense of pride in their work and demonstrated to family and friends, staff and carers the skills and techniques they have accomplished.

The selection of images shown, demonstrate individuals using their acquired and enhanced skills and the results in which they create with the aid of specialised staff. Note also, the presence of happy mood and interaction within these images. The effects from one simple colourful mark on an otherwise blank sheet of paper to a collage full of expressive marks, colours and textures, for our individuals offer truly great achievements.
